Birthday Walk
In
the Montessori classroom children have the
opportunity to celebrate his or her birthday by
doing the “Birthday Walk”.
The purpose of this event
is:
 |
To
allow children to better understand why
they have turned a year older |
 |
To recognize how they have grown
and changed during their life |
 |
To allow their friends to join in
this special event with them |
The Birthday walks consist
of the birthday child walking in a circle around
a yellow symbol, which represents the sun. As
the child continues his or her walk, the parent
and teacher speak of the child’s life – his
or her growth, important events, special toys,
people, etc. – as each year is represented. At
the conclusion, the group sings. If the child
has brought personal photographs, she or he
shares them at this time.
To strengthen the concept that giving is as
important as receiving, it is suggested that the
child contribute a book to the school library on
his or her birthday. When it is read in the
future, the reader will note the contribution of
the book on the special occasion of a child in
the Eliot community.
A recommended author and
book list is made available.
