Letter from Bill

September 2008

Welcome back to another great year at the Eliot Montessori School. We are very busy preparing for the return of your lovely sons and daughters. During the summer, the office is open from 9:00 AM until 3:00 PM if you have any questions. During the school year, the office will be open from 8:00 AM until 4:30 PM. Teachers return during the week of August 25th and they will be hard at work setting up their classrooms and updating CPR and First Aid certifications. If your child is a Lower Elementary or an Upper Elementary student, he or she is invited to visit his/her Lower EL or Upper El classrooms on Tuesday, September 2nd.

I invite you to the EMPA Welcome Coffee, to be held in the Sally King Gym on the first day of school, September 3rd, following drop-off at 8:30. If you are new to the Eliot community this is a great way to get to know us and your fellow parents. If you are a returning parent, this is a fun time to catch up with all of your Eliot friends. Remember that parking is tight, so please park on the green in front of the Brick Building or behind on the soccer field. Please remember there is no parking on Auburn Street.

Traffic for drop-off and pick-up during the first few days of school is likely to take longer than usual, as families get used to the routine and greet old friends. Please remember to place a sign on your dashboard or visor with your child’s first and last name to assist our teachers at pick-up time. Please review the Pick Up and Drop Off Procedures before the first day of school so that you understand the school’s expectations.

We are very lucky to have so many of the staff and faculty returning this year. New faculty members include Karin Woessner, who will be working with Julia Green in Lower Elementary, and Suruchi Lal, who will join David Wilkins and Pasquale Puleo in our Upper Elementary classroom.

Please remember to submit your child’s immunization form to the school office prior to the start of school on September 3rd.

According to Massachusetts General Law Chapter 76 Section 15 Vaccination and Immunization:

“No child shall, except as hereinafter provided, be admitted to school except upon presentation of physician’s certificate that the child has been successfully immunized against diphtheria, pertussis, tetanus, measles and poliomyelitis and such other communicable diseases as may be specified from time to time by the department of public health.

A child shall be admitted to school upon certification by a physician that he has personally examined such child ant that in his/her opinion the physical condition of the child is such that his/her health would be endangered by such vaccination or by any of such immunizations. Such certification shall be submitted at the beginning of each school year.”

Remember that the school is Nut Aware (nut free) so please plan your lunches and snacks accordingly. We have been advised that we need to use the word “aware” rather than “free” although we will be no less vigilant within the school. We have not changed any of our policies or procedures which have been mailed to you. Speak with your child’s teacher on Back to School Night to get specific procedures and/or suggestions for alternatives for lunches, snacks and celebrations.

We look forward to welcoming you all to Eliot. A school is not a school without children.

Sincerely yours,

Bill O’Hearn
Head of School
